From "The Racers Edge", sprint car edition

By John Nicholas: 01/21/03, Fremont, Ohio - The exciting racing of "The Track That Action Built, Fremont Speedway, will be broadcast live every Saturday during the 2003 season. WFRO Eagle 99.1 FM out of Fremont made the announcement on "The Last Lap" radio show on Jan. 20.

D.C. Bash, the Operations Manager on Eagle 99 said, “Eagle 99 F.M. is now officially your racing radio station for Fremont Speedway in 2003 ”.

Opening night April 19th at The Track That Action Built will be called, “Saturday Night Thunder” on Eagle 99 FM.  All three divisions - 410 sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks - will have their racing action broadcast. D.C. Bash will be the host of the show with former 410 sprint car driver Brain Smith as the color commentator.

Station Owners Tom Cline and Jim Lorenz said they saw racing was a major sport in the Fremont area and new a live broadcast from Fremont Speedway would be a hit with area listeners.

Once the go-ahead was given, Bash called Jim Butler from Knoxville, Iowa, who does a radio broadcast from Knoxville Raceway. Butler gave Bash plenty of advice on setting up equipment they would have to have for the Fremont shows.

"It’s a little bit of a more touchy broadcast because you have to be reporting from the pits, people want to know what’s happening behind the scenes," said Bash. "There will be a lot more to the show than just the racing. We'll have interviews with drivers, crew members, track personnel...everybody that makes the racing fun at Fremont."

Airtime and pre show is at 7 p.m. April 19th with interviews with the drivers and more planed. Then a full slate of racing in all three divisions from start to finish including heats and features thru out the night.

Bash added the design of the broadcast is to try to put new fans in the seats for people who don’t know the sport and this is a way for them to get it.

Bash is a Fremont native and was on the local T. V. broadcast of “The Dirt Zone” for The All Star Circuit of Champions sprint car series a couple of years ago.
