Roepke Wins Chuck
Kear Memorial-Fremont 50; Jamie Miller Scores 5th Feature Win of Season
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Aug. 2, 2003) - Alvin Roepke gave his mom a special gift
Saturday, Aug. 2 at Fremont Speedway - a victory. The Elmore, Ohio driver
took the $5,000 first place prize in the Chuck Kear Memorial-Fremont 50,
with his mom looking on.
"Mom (Jean) came to the races back in 1983 when I first tried a sprint
car...I drove my uncle Jim's 7a and put it off the first turn. Mom said
it scared her and she never came back until tonight, and she got to see
us win," said Roepke.
"My boys, my boys, my boys...they gave me an awesome race car. We've
been steadily getting better over the past month and finally got to start
up front and got a win," Roepke added. "It shows you how tough this is
when the 18th fast qualifier gets to start on the pole because so many
of the faster cars didn't transfer to the feature from their heats."
Roepke took the lead from the start, but fourth starting Byron Reed
charged around him on the high side about 20 laps into the feature.
The high side of the track seemed to go away, and Roepke regained the lead
just past the halfway point and cruised to the win. Roepke's win came aboard
the Mt. Dew, PMI Metals, Rick's Trucking entry which is owned by himself
and Doug Ford.
Behind Roepke at the checkered was rookie Brock Mayes, who started sixth;
Reed; John Ivy, who started 18th; and rookie Craig Mintz who started 14th
rounded out the top five.
In the 305 sprint feature, Fostoria's Jamie Miller moved around Bryan
Grove on lap three and built a substantial lead. Meanwhile, Gibsonburg's
Roger Shammo - the current point leader at Fremont - was working his way
up from ninth to take the runner-up spot on lap 10. Shammo began reeling
Miller in and raced underneath him with eight laps remaining. Miller moved
down to the bottom and blocked Shammo's advance and again pulled away to
claim his fifth feature of the season at Fremont.
Shammo finished second with Castalia's Caleb Griffith third; Millberry's
Andy Shammo fourth; and Bryan Grove rounding out the top five.
The 22 A-main starters in the 410 feature, along with the first five
alternates shared in over $8,500 in manufacturer's gifts. The 20 cars starting
the 305 sprint A-main, along with the six alternates shared in over $4,000
in manufacturer's gifts.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 9 with TransHealth
Night featuring the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks.
