Steve Sabo Wins In Truck Feature During Sandusky Co. Fair

By Brian Liskai

FREMONT, Ohio (Aug. 19, 2003) - Trucks were king at Fremont Speedway Tuesday night during the second annual Henry Motorsports Night during the 151st Sandusky County Fair. Fremont's Steve Sabo took the crown, passing defending fair race champion Danny Roepke with five laps remaining in the 20 lap affair for his 17th career Fremont victory.

"I have to thank all my sponsors, especially Smith Automotive for giving me a great engine," said Sabo. "The top side was fast tonight...I normally run the bottom, but you gotta do what you've gotta do to win and that's where I had to go."

The win moved Sabo into a tie for 17th on the all-time career feature win list at "The Track That Action Built." It was worth $500 thanks to $100 donations each from Ross Lawn Care and ABC Detailing and Pressure Washing. Smith Automotive kicked in an extra $50 for the second place runner while the Blue Eagle Inn of Bettisville added $50 for the third place finisher.

Thirty-eight trucks signed into the pit area with Fremont's Bobby Davis setting quick time with a new track record of 18.42, shattering Sabo's old mark of 18.78. Davis received a new pair of racing gloves from Henry Motorsports of Bellevue, and $50 from the Last Lap radio show.

The 10 fastest qualifiers were lined up single file for an old time Australian Pursuit where once you are passed you are out. Coming down for the checkered, Davis and Fostoria's Bob Dible collided, with Davis taking the $100 bonus. Dible earned $50 for his efforts, with Greg Summit taking home $25 for third, all thanks to Davis Brothers Carpetting.

The heat races, which were sponsored by Fremont Fence, went to Jim McGrath, Dwight Waltermeier, Dible, and Darrin Dukeshire.  The two B-mains went to Rex Wright and Summitt with Republic's Dave Gibbs taking the win in the "Crack-The-Whip" race where the last place car is eliminated each lap.

Also, Ron Kepling earned a new driver's uniform from Henry Motorsports for winning the "Hard Charger Award" for passing the most trucks in the feature, Kepling moved from 22nd to a ninth place finish.
