Lee Jacobs holds
off dad for Fremont win
Kraylek dominates 305s
Arnold squeaks by for
truck victory
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, April 30, 2005) - Lee Jacobs got the thrill
of a lifetime Saturday at Fremont Speedway - he got to race side by side
with his dad, Kenny, for the feature lead and went on to take the 30-lap
Willies Sales & Service/Toro Lawn Mower victory.
"I'm so happy to win this for the Burmeister family...they have given
so much to racing and they deserve this win," said the young Jacobs beside
his Burmeister Water Hauling #16. "How special is this...I looked up on
the scoreboard on that one restart and saw the top three spots were all
held by Jacobs (uncle Dean, Kenny and Lee). When I won here two years ago,
I had to call dad..tonight he got to see it. This will help mom get to
feeling better too," Lee added about the motorcycle accident his dad and
mom were involved in this past winter in Florida.
At the drop of the green, Findlay's Jason Dukes bolted into the lead
from his pole starting position. He built a sizeable advantage before the
first caution flag flew on lap 7 for a Craig Mintz spin. Dean Jacobs
moved from his inside third row starting spot into second with Lee Jacobs
third from his fourth starting spot, Kenny Jacobs fourth and David Harrison
in fifth. Dukes held the advantage for only a lap when the green replaced
the yellow as Dean Jacobs shot around him for the top spot. However, all
eyes were on the 63 of Greg Wilson who was rim-riding around the competition,
moving from 14th starting spot into the top 5 by lap 14.
The red flag flew on lap 17 for a Mark Keegan tip-over and the running
order was Dean Jacobs, Lee Jacobs, Kenny Jacobs, Wilson, Dukes, Mike Linder,
Harrison, John Ivy, Dale Blaney (up fro his 18th starting spot) and Byron
Reed.
Lee shot around uncle Dean on the restart to take the lead, bringing
dad and Wilson with him. Lee built up a four car advantage as Kenny Jacobs
and Wilson battled each other hard for second - Wilson utilizing the extreme
high line and getting squeezed to the front stretch wall a couple of times.
Lee Jacobs, from Holmesville, Ohio, worked the middle of the track
to perfection to score the win over Wilson, Kenny Jacobs, Ivy, Linder,
Blaney, Dukes, Harrison, Reed and Todd Heller.
Bill Kraylek dominated the 305 sprint feature, leading all 25 of the
non-stop main laps. The Fostoria driver lapped up to the seventh place
position in the A-main to score his sixth career Fremont victory over Bryan
Scott, Daniel Smith, Scott Miller, Andy Shammo, Paul Weaver, Brad Bowman,
Barry Cole, A.J. SLeek and Willie Keegan.
"I needed this after all of the stuff I tore up a couple of weeks ago
at Attica," said Kraylek besides his Snyder's Floor Covering, Dyers Home
Improvement sprinter. "My arm (left) is throbbing a little, but this win
helps ease the pain a little," Kraylek added about the chipped bone he
suffered in the Attica crash.
The Coors Light Dirt Truck feature was a dandy, with four trucks battling
side by side for the victory. Tiffin's Brian Arnold took the lead from
defending track champion Steve Sabo with two laps to go when the yellow
came out. Sabo made a last-lap challenged, but Arnold literally won by
a bumper. Behind Arnold and Sabo at the checkered were Dan Roepke, Bob
Dible, Andy Maynard, Art Howey Jr., Bobby Davis, Art Ball, Cory Ward and
Jim Welty.
"Terry Harrison isn't the only one who can put this truck in victory
lane," said Arnold, referring to last year's powder puff feature won by
the wife of sprint driver David Harrison. "I have to thank Crown Battery
for giving me a good battery...I'm still looking for a main sponsor though,"
he said referring to his stickerless #33.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, May 7, as the All
Star Circuit of Champion sprints come to town for Fort Ball Pizza Palace
Night. The 305 sprints are also on the racing card.
