Reed holds off Mintz and Ivy for Budweiser cash at Fremont

By Brian Liskai

FREMONT, Ohio (May 28, 2005) - Most race experts say in today's equal sprint car competition it's impossible to come from the tail to win a 30-lap feature. But that almost happened at Fremont Speedway Saturday during the Budweiser Shootout which features twin mains, with the finish from the first 25-lap affair completely inverted for the second 30-lap finale.

Defending Fremont champion John Ivy scored the opening Bud Light feature win and started 20th in the Budweiser finale. Meanwhile, 2003 Fremont champion Byron Reed, who struggled all night and finished 15th in the first feature, took the lead from Scott Euler on lap 20 of the finale from his sixth starting spot.

The crowd was watching Ivy work his way up through the pack and into the second spot with a handful of laps remaining. A yellow with three laps to go bunched up the pack with the crowd on their feet to see if Ivy would score the double win and the $2,000 Bud Bonus Bucks for a $7,500 payday.

Reed finally found something on the bottom of the track in his Reebar Diecasting #5 and held on for the second feature win over a hard-charging Craig Mintz and Ivy.

"I know some people probably think I finished that bad in the first feature to start up front in the second, but that wasn't the case at all. I was horrible all night...that's probably the worst I've ever been here. We qualified terrible and couldn't even move in hour heat. Every time this car came off the track we made a lot of changes to it. To be honest I think the track came to us more than we adjusted to the track," said Reed.

For Ivy, it was an exciting night.

"We love this kind of event...it's a lot of racing and it's fun. I knew it was going to be tough to come out and move through this kind of competition," said Ivy beside his Carousel Racing #5i. "I have to thank Sid and Beth for giving us everything we need to race and to Guy Meyers and my brother Scott for tuning this thing in...to pass that many cars during green flag laps and get up there and have a chance to win means I had an awesome car."

In the first feature, Ivy used lapped traffic as a pick to pass Brandon Martin with just five laps to go for the win, the 23rd victory in his career at "The Track That Action Built, moving him into a tie for 15th on the track's all-time win list with Jim Fleming. Bobby Clark was second and Martin hung on for third.

Woodville's Dan Roepke picked up his 20th career feature in the Coors Light Dirt Truck main. Roepke and Tiffin's Brian Arnold raced side by side for much of the 15-lap feature. Arnold finished second with Tiffin's Paul Dymond third.

"That was good, clean, hard racing...it was a blast," said Roepke beside his Village Inn sponsored #53. "Brian and I raced clean...I hope that was as exciting for the fans as it was for us."

Clyde's John Mayes Jr. scored an emotional win in the UUI Limited Late Model main, over Jeff McCoy and Mike Bores.

"My dad won here some 20 years ago...so for me to pick up my first win here is something very special," said Mayes beside his B&K Auto Service sponsored #69.
