Steve Endicott
wins first truck race; Tim Sabo scores limited late victory; buses excite
fans
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (July 3, 2005) - Steve Endicott waited until the richest
Coors Light Dirt Truck feature in the history of the division to pick up
his first career victory Sunday at Fremont Speedway on Henry Motorsports
Night.
Fremont's Tim Sabo picked up his 25th career Fremont victory in the
UUI Limited Late Model feature.
Fremont City Schools bus driver Kevin Rhineberger won the school bus
race which pitted six professional school bus drivers.
The 25-lap, $1,000 to win Coors Light Dirt Truck feature saw seven
trucks battle up front the entire way. Endicott held the lead early only
to watch Bobby Davis slide by. Defending track champion Steve Sabo got
into the mix, along with Art Howey Jr. and Danny Roepke.
Endicott used the bottom groove to sneak by Davis and went on to score
the win over Sabo, Howey, Roepke, Bob Dible, Dwight Waltermier (who earned
the Henry Motorsports Hard Charger Award from his 19th starting position),
Ron Kepling, Jim McGrath, Bobby Davis, and Jim Welty.
"I have to thank my crew for all the hard work they put in this deal,"
said Endicott beside his Stylecrest Products sponsored truck. "That was
a lot of hard work...I knew I had to hit my marks on the bottom, if I slipped
up I knew I would be in trouble."
In the UUI Limited Late Model main, Sabo jumped into the lead from
his pole position, hugging the bottom groove. Sandusky's Larry Kingseed
ran side to side with Sabo for most of the feature, but would finish second,
Mike Marteney (up from 14th), Brandon Perkins, John Mayes Sr. (who earned
the Henry Motorsports Hard Charger Award from his 23rd starting position),
MIke Bores, Ryan Missler, Jamie Reed, Jim Gingery and Steve Kester.
"These limited lates are a lot of fun," said Sabo. "I hurt my back
a couple of days ago and this took a lot out of me."
A big crowd was on hand to watch the school buses battle it out. Rhineberger
raced fellow Fremont bus driver Dawn Horn for the fictory, with New Jersey
school bus driver Karen Crevello third, Woodmore bus driver Anna Brewster,
Fremont bus driver Ron Reed, and Gibsonburg bus driver Chris Roepke rounding
out the field.
"I learned how to driver in a school bus. My strategy was just to hold
it to the floor," said Rhineberger.
In the ladies truck race, Jenny Spitler, girlfriend of 410 sprint driver
Bobby Clark, overtook early leader Kathy Rando, mother of 305 sprint driver
Steve Rando, to claim the Securance Services Powder Puff win. Rando would
finish second, with Marci "Bubbles" Baker coming home third.
"That was a lot of fun," said Spitler. "I want to thank Dave Gibbs
for letting me drive his truck and to all my sponsors including Jenni's
Copper Penny and Wise Guys Pizza."
In the race drivers school bus race, defending 410 sprint track champion
John Ivy scored the win over Rich Farmer, Billy Fleming, Otis Clymer, Ross
Rollins and Matt Merrill.
"That was a lot of fun. Dawn (Horn) told me how to run her and she
was fast," said Ivy. "All the sponsorship money on this goes to the National
Foundation for Transplants...so it helps a good cause and we put on a show
and had fun."
Bob's Machine Shop of Fostoria paid the winners of the truck heats
$50, with $30 for second and $20 for third.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, July 9, for Beck
Oil Night with the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and Coors Light Dirt Trucks
on the racing card. Also, the two heats, two B-mains and A-main for the
305 sprints that were rained out on Thursday, June 30, will be made up
as well.
