Kenny Jacobs holds
of Craig Mintz to win Chuck Kear 50-lapper at Fremont;
Paul Weaver, Jeremy
Durst share 305 feature wins
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, July 30, 2005) - Kenny Jacobs has won a lot
of races over his 33-year career, but perhaps none as important as the
feature he picked up Saturday at Fremont Speedway.
The Holmesville, Ohio driver known as the "Mouse" used a lapped car
as a pick to hold off a hard-charging Craig Mintz to win the 50-lap Chuck
Kear Memorial race at "The Track That Action Built." The victory was worth
$5,000 to Jacobs. Also, all the drivers in the A-main for both the 410
sprints and both 305 sprints shared in over $25,000 worth of manufacturer
prizes,
the package put together by Kear's Speedshop.
"After last night (at Attica Raceway Park) I told the guys if things
didn't turn around tonight, I was done...I hate to lose and I was ready
to quit," said Jacobs beside his Rob Hunter owned sprinter. "We brought
Andy Potter on board this week and he got us dialed in."
"It's just been so frustrating because Rob Hunter has given me everything
I need to win and we haven't gotten the job done," said Jacobs who is retiring
from racing after this season. "I have to thank Classic Racing Products
out of Michigan, B&B Oval Track Supplies, McDonalds of Lima, Hoosier
Racing Tire, Crown Battery...a lot of people have helped us out on this
and stuck by us and we hadn't been able to reward them until now."
"I also want to thank Shirley Kear (of Kear's Speedshop). I bought my
first race car from Kear's. A lot of racers today didn't get to know Chuck
Kear...he was a very special man. There probably isn't a racer out there
today that hasn't gotten some sort of help from Kear's," said Jacobs.
The 305 sprints were split into two complete fields based on odds and
even numbers in the point standings. Paul Weaver picked up his second win
of the weekend (he also won Friday night at Attica Raceway Park), passing
Scott Kraylek with four laps to go and cruising to the victory. In the
second feature, Bellevue's Jeremy Durst took the lead on lap 15 and pulled
away the final 10 circuits for his second win of the season.
In the 50-lap 410 sprint feature, Bobby Clark jumped into the lead at
the drop of the green, with Craig Mintz and Kenny Jacobs in tow. On lap
three, Clark continued to lead with Mike Linder moving into second and
Mintz and Jacobs falling back. Clark pulled away while the action heated
up for second third between Mintz and Jacobs.
The first caution would fly on lap 14 when Lee Jacobs suffered a flat
right rear and Byron Reed got into him, ending Reed's night. On the restart,
Linder used the bottom grove to momentarily take the lead from Clark, but
the yellow would fly again for a flat tire on the Tim Hunter machine. That
would put Clark back out front with Linder, Kenny Jacobs, Mintz and
Brandon Martin in tow. On the restart, Clark would pull away, with Jacobs
sliding around Linder for second. On lap 18, Jacobs would duck under Clark
and take the lead. Two laps later, Mintz would get around Linder and the
next circuit would slide past Clark into second.
The running order just past the half-way mark was Jacobs, Mintz, Linder,
Martin, and Kelly Kinser, up from his 14th starting spot. The yellow would
fly for the final time on lap 35, with Jacobs and Mintz holding the top
spots and a lapped car between that duo and third place running Mike
Linder and Clark began to fall back through the pack. Mintz began putting
pressure on Jacobs with 10 laps to go, trying the outside line and then
the bottom groove as the two got into heavy lapped traffic.
With three laps to go, Jacobs and Mintz were nose to tail. Mintz made
a run to the outside of Jacobs exiting turn two on the white flag lap,
but Jacobs had the slight advantage entering the final two turns. Jacobs
ducked under the lapped machine of Tom Busch, as Mintz got held up, and
"the mouse" went on to the win.
Mintz would come in second followed by Linder, Martin, Kinser, David
Harrison, John Ivy (up from 21st), Rob Chaney, Jason Dukes and Mark Keegan
(up from 22nd).
In the first 305 sprint feature, rookie Steve Rando would charge into
he lead. Lapped traffic would come into play by lap 13, as Scott Kraylek
closed on the Lindsey, Ohio youngster. A yellow on the next circuit would
give Rando a clear track, by Kraylek utilized a classic slide job in turns
one and two on the restart to take the lead. All eyes were on last
week's feature winner Paul Weaver, who was up to third from his 12th starting
spot.
By lap 15, Weaver had moved around Rando into second, setting his sights
on Kraylek. Weaver would drive around Kraylek on the high side of turn
three with six laps to go and would cruise to the win.
"The track slowed down and we got faster," said Weaver beside his Dee
Genzman owned sprinter. "This car just really likes the high side and all
I had to do was make sure I drove it in hard."
Behind Weaver at the finish were Kraylek, Daniel Smith, Andy Shammo
and Rando.
In the second 305 sprint feature, Fremont's Craig Kays jumped into the
lead at the drop of the green and built a sizeable advantage. The battle
behind him for second was a dandy between Barry Cole, Dustin Keegan and
Jeremy Durst. On lap 14, Cole caught and passed Kays for the lead, bringing
Durst with him. Durst drove under Cole a lap later and cruised to the win.
"This is a 1997 J&J...we have a brand new one at home, but this
thing is just awesome. It was a lot of fun to drive. It would stick on
the top or the bottom, all I had to do was put the pedal down," said Durst
beside his Josh Meggitt owned sprinter. "I have to thank South Ridge Farm
Market and
Kenny Meggitt for helping us on this deal. Look out when it comes time
for the 305 sprint invitational later this year."
Behind Durst at the checkered were Cole, Brad Bowman, Bryan Scott (up
from 19th) and Kays.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 6, for Lee's
Famous Recipe Country Chicken Night featuring the 410 sprints, 305 sprints
and Coors Light Dirt Trucks.
