VanWormer, Kraylek, Connors take Memorial wins at Fremont

By Brian Liskai

FREMONT, Ohio (May 27) - The pits were jammed with race cars to help celebrate Memorial Day, with 47 late models, 38 of the 305 sprints and 32 dirt trucks.

Youngster Jeep VanWormer of Michigan drove a steady race to take the American Late Model Series win. It was only his third career feature win in three seasons of racing and his first at Fremont Speedway during True Value Hardware of Woodville Night.

"I'm really beginning to like Fremont Speedway. It's a racey little track and the fans are great," said VanWormer who claimed $2,000 for the win.

VanWormer started fourth in the feature and took the lead from Greg Johnson on the 12th lap and threaded his way through lapped traffic perfectly. Behind VanWormer at the checkered were Jeff Kohn, Kris Patterson, Rick DeLong and Wayne Maffett Jr.

In the 305 sprint feature, Scott Kraylek of Fostoria, Ohio, worked his way up from his sixth starting spot to take the lead away from rookie Brian Sebetto of Fremont with about 8 laps remaining and cruised to the win, his first of the 2002 season and his third career victory at Fremont Speedway.

Behind Kraylek were Sebetto, were Chad Laux of Norwalk, Ohio; Brandon Martin of Attica, Ohio; and Chris Lang of Bascom, Ohio.

The Dirt Truck A-Main was marred by several wrecks, but once it got underway it was a dandy. Polesitter L.J. Connors of Clyde, Ohio, and Greg Summit of Carey, Ohio, raced side-by-side for several laps, with Connors nipping Summit at the checkered. It was the veteran's 13th career feature win at "The Track That Action Built," tying him with Jim Leaser for 31st on the all-time feature win list.

Behind Connors and Summit at the checkered were Jay Boyd of Findlay, Ohio, Ron Kepling and Brian Arnold.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action on Saturday, June 1 with Beck Oil Night, paying the 410 sprints $2,500 to win; the 305 sprints $500 to win and the dirt trucks $300 to win. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with the first race scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
