Yeley Takes USAC Loot at Fremont

By Brian Liskai

FREMONT, Ohio (June 21) - Like an old western bank robber, Phoenix, Arizona's J.J. Yeley rode into Fremont Thursday night and stole all the loot during the second leg of the inaugural United States Auto Club Buckeye Nationals.

In the USAC National Midget feature, Yeley powered his Steve Lewis Ford powered Beat into the lead at the drop of the green and never looked back.

In the Stoops Freightliner sprint car main, Yeley overtook early race leader Boston Reid on lap four, and threaded his way through lapped traffic perfectly to take the checkered in his GT Racing ABC Sand & Rock - Red Line Oil Twister chassis.

"The track got hard...I wished it would have laid rubber because it made it a little slick. I had to use a lot of patience," said Yeley of his two wins. "Both crews gave me excellent race cars. I really like coming to these little tracks. Fremont has such a great racing crowd. I hope we do this again next year."

In the 30-lap midget feature - the first ever USAC midget race at Fremont Speedway - while Yeley was overpowering the field, the youth movement was making its way through the pack. Sixteen-year-old Bobby East took to the high side of the track while everyone else was running around the bottom, and moved from his 20th starting spot to a second place finish in his Klatt Enterprises Beast. Not to be outdone, 17-year-old Shane Hollingsworth drove his Concrete Connection sponsored Stealth from sixth starting position to a solid third place finish.

Rounding out the top five were current USAC midget point leader Dave Darland, who drove his Steve Lewis Beast up from 14th starting spot, and James Chesson, who started 19th.

In the sprint car feature, Yeley used the middle grove of the smooth surface to easily cruise to the victory over Tracy Hines, who started 12th; 13th starting Troy Rutherford; Jay Drake; and Kevin Brisco, who started 14th in the main.

With his two feature victories, Yeley moved 34 points of Dave Darland for the USAC midget point lead, and to within 97 points of Tracy Hines in the sprint point battle.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, June 22 for Burger King Night with its regular weekly divisions of 410 winged sprints; 305 winged sprints; and dirt trucks.
