Rookie
Shawn Chaney passes veteran Mark Keegan on last lap for
Fremont win
By Brian
Liskai
FREMONT,
Ohio (June 22, 2002) - Rookie Shawn Chaney passed nine-time
Fremont
Speedway track champion Mark Keegan on the last lap and
held him off as the
two made contact coming out of turn four to claim his first
410 sprint
feature win on Burger King Night.
As the
white flag flew, Chaney, who raced 305 sprints the previous
two
seasons, ducked under Keegan, who had led the entire race,
as they entered
turn one. Chaney had the advantage off of turn two, but
Keegan made a last
ditch move under him in turn three. The two made contact,
with Keegan
spinning and Chaney going on to the victory.
"When
we went into one, I thought 'man this is for the lead.'
Then when I
saw him beside me in four, I thought 'Mark you have a lot
more wins here
than I do...tonight's my night.' This is incredible...I've
only been racing
for three years. This is worth all the hard work and money,"
said an elated
Chaney, who hails from Fremont.
Fremont's
Brian Smith, who raced with Chaney, who started 10th and
Keegan,
who started fifth, for the lead on the last lap, settled
for his second
consecutive runner-up finish, with Elmore's Alvin Roepke
third; Holmesville,
Ohio's Lee Jacobs fourth, and Fremont's Mike Linder, up
from 18th starting
spot to round out the top five. Keegan was able to keep
his sprinter moving
after the spin and ended up sixth.
In the
305 sprint A-Main, Fostoria, Ohio's Bill Kraylek picked
up his first
win of the season at Fremont over a hard-charging Craig
Mintz of Gibsonburg.
Bellevue's Keith Whaley finished third, with Fremont's Jerrid
Potter and
Bascom's Chris Lang rounding out the top five.
Fremont's
Jeff Dougherty has more second place finishes at Fremont
Speedway
in 2002 than anyone. He shed his bridesmaid dress Saturday
to take his first
feature win of the season. Behind Dougherty were Fremont's
John Rhoads and
Bobby Davis, Carey, Ohio's Greg Summitt, and Darrell Brown.
Fremont
Speedway will be back in action Saturday, June 29 for the
Baumann
Automotive Group Night featuring the 410 sprints, 305 sprints
and dirt
trucks.
