Roger
Shammo holds off Mayes for richest 305 sprint race in country
By Brian
Liskai
FREMONT,
Ohio (Sept. 2, 2002) - Gibsonburg, Ohio's Roger Shammo saw
the
richest payday in his driving career slip away from him
twice. But, when the
checkered flag fell Monday at Fremont Speedway, it was Shammo
who was taking
home the $2,500 in the Baumann Auto Group 305 Sprint Invitational.
Shammo
held off a hard-charging Brock Mayes and current point leader
Bryan
Scott to claim his second career feature at Fremont and
his first of the
2002 season.
"When
Craig (Mintz) drove around me, I thought 'okay, Craig's
fast, and
$1,000 would be alright' (second place prize money),"
said Shammo. "Then I
saw him on the fence and I thought I could hang on. Then,
I saw Bryan stick
his nose under me when I got hung up on a lapped car, and
I thought we'd
have to settle for second again. But, then the yellow came
out and I knew
with a clear track we'd be alright. I think Dickerdo (sprint
car driver Dick
Liskai, who died last month from cancer) must have been
watching over us.
This one is for him."
Shammo
started on the pole for the 30-lap main with Bob Dawson
along side.
At the drop of the green, Dawson powered into the lead,
but Shammo got
around him using the cushion a lap later. Mintz, who started
seventh,
powered around Shammo on lap 13 when Shammo got hung up
behind a lapped car.
However, Mintz made contact in turn three on lap 14 and
sailed into the
fence, ending his night.
On the
restart, Shammo pulled away while Castalia's Bryan Scott
moved into
second, bringing Mayes with him. Scott used the low grove
to move around
Shammo on the 27th lap, but a spin brought out the caution
just as the
leaders were getting into lapped traffic, and gave the lead
back to Shammo.
Shammo held on at the checkered as Scott and Mayes were
both putting the
pressure on.
Behind
Shammo at the checkered were Mayes, who started 8th; Scott,
Dawson
and Castalia's Matt Karbler.
The
Gressman Powersports heat wins went to Josh Hill, Caleb
Griffith, Brian
Neeb and Daniel Smith. The Progress Plastic Products B-main
victory went to
Dustin Keegan, while the C-main win fell to Skip Hoffman.
Fostoria's Jamie
Miller picked up a $200 bonus from the Last Lap Radio show
for setting a new
track record in qualifying with a clocking of 13.87. Miller's
night ended
when he crashed while leading the B-main.
ProShocks
gave gift certificates of $300, $200 and $100 for the second,
third and fourth place finishers, while Beck Suppliers gave
$25 gas cards to
the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth place finishers. Also,
the $200 Don
Eckhardt Hard Charger Award went to Scott Miller who moved
from 20th in the
feature to a 7th place finish. Henry Motorsports also donated
a set of
driving clothes to Miller.
In the
dirt truck feature, Port Clinton's Mike Porter lost the
lead, then
regained it with a handful of laps remaining and held on
to score his first
career feature win. Steve Sabo, Matt Lucius, John Rhoads
and Dan Roepke
rounded out the top five.
Fremont
Speedway will be back in action Friday and Saturday, Sept.
6 and 7
with the All Star Circuit of Champion sprint cars on hand.
