Linder wins 3rd;
Andrews, Valenti claim wins at Fremont
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, July 8, 2006) - The top shelf is normally where
your grandma keeps the cookies, but its where Mike Linder put his sprint
car
to rim-ride to his third win of the season at Fremont Speedway on Schiets
Motors Night.
All three feature events were very exciting, coming down to the
last
handful of laps for the winner to be decided.
In the Coors Light Dirt Truck feature, Risingson's Shawn Valenti edged
out
Jim McGrath and Jim Ward for his first career win.
Sandusky's Chris Andrews picked up his first career Fremont victory
-
literally by a front bumper over Bryan Sebetto - in the Fremont Federal
Credit Union 305 Sprints.
"Thank you Randy Ford (Fremont Speedway track preparation director)...we
had
a curb to run against. The last few weeks the track has been smooth
and
slick and we just haven't been able to find the handle when it's like
that,"
said Linder beside his Beaverdam Contracting/Linder's Speed Equipment
#3.
"It's a thin line between being fast up there and sliding it off the
top. I
hit the backstretch wall a couple of times. But you can't let up with
Byron
Reed and Johnny Ivy on your bumper."
"I knew everyone was going to run the bottom. Tim Kern set this thing
up for
the top...I knew I'd be fast up there," said Valenti. "I have to thank
Burns
Petroleum, my mom and dad and everybody who works hard for me to go
have
fun. I was beginning to think we would never get here...this is awesome!"
"I struggled to get around lapped cars. I was set up to run the bottom
and
when I got to cars running down there and I tried to move up the car
just
wouldn't go. When I saw Bryan drive around I thought we would have
to settle
for second...then I saw him slide off the top of turn 3 and I said
to myself
'here we go...you still have a shot.' I just gased it up and here we
are,"
said Andrews beside his Blue Chip Machining/Spill Tech Environmental
Services sponsored #15c sprinter.
In the Fort Ball Pizza 410 sprints, Jamie Miller jumped into the early
lead
with Jon Ivy moving into second from his fourth starting spot and Linder
into third from his seventh starting position. Linder, the current
Fremont
Speedway point leader, shot into the lead, driving around Miller on
lap 4,
with Ivy moving into second a lap later. Ivy would pull along side
Linder
using the bottom of turns 1 and 2, while Linder would have the advantage
using the top of turns 3 and 4.
Linder and Ivy would continue to race side by side, with Ivy taking
the lead
on lap 9. Ivy would get bogged down somewhat in lapped traffic, allowing
Linder to shot around for the lead again on lap 14, but Ivy would regain
the
top spot at the halfway mark.
The caution would fly on lap 16 for a spinning Troy Vaccaro, with the
running order Ivy, Linder and three lapped machines back to third running
Miller, Rodney Duncan and Byron Reed. On lap 18, Linder would sling-shot
around Ivy utilizing the top of turn four. The final caution would
fly on
lap 21 for Bryan Scott, with Linder and Ivy leading Reed, Phil Gressman
and
Miller.
With just four laps remaining, the battle for the lead was between Linder,
Ivy and Reed. Linder would pull away for the win, with Reed eding Ivy
for
second. Gressman, Miller, 11th starting Craig Mintz, David Harrison,
Duncan,
16th starting Alvin Roepke and 15th starting Brian Smith would round
out the
top 10.
In the truck main, Bellevue's Jim Ward would jump into the early lead,
with
Mark Warnick, Bobby Davis, Cory Ward and Bob Dible in tow. By lap 5,
Jim
Ward would lead over his son, Cory, with Warnick, Davis, Dible and
Jim
McGrath putting the pressure on. Two laps later, the Wards would Dible
and
McGrath close, as you could cover the top six trucks with a blanket.
On lap 14, Jim Ward held the advantage using the bottom groove, while
McGrath shot around the outside in second and now 14th starting Valenti
in
third and three-time Fremont winner Dible in fourth. With three laps
remaining, Ward, Valenti and McGrath raced three wide for the lead.
As the
white flag flew, Valenti had used the rim to take the lead, with Ward
and
McGrath battling for second right on the leader's bumper.
Valenti would go on to score the win, with McGrath, Jim Ward, Dible,
Davis,
Dwight Waltermeier, who had come from the tail after a first lap spin,
Cory
Ward, Brian Arnold, Art Howey Jr. and Warnick rounding out the top
10.
In 305 sprint feature, Andrews would jump into the early lead from his
pole
starting spot, with Bobby Foster, Kevin Lee, Andy Shammo and Dustin
Keegan
in tow. The leaders hit lapped traffic by lap 8, allowing Foster -
using the
bottom groove - to close on rim-riding Andrews. The battle between
Andrews
and Foster would continue through lap 14, when eighth starting Bryan
Sebetto - also utilizing the top groove - would get in the fray. Sebetto
would dispose of Foster on lap 17 and would pull on the back bumper
of
Andrews a lap later.
With 10 laps remaining, Sebetto shot around Andrews using the classic
slide
job to take the lead. It looked like Sebetto would pick up his third
win of
the season, but as he entered turn three on the last lap, he slipped
off the
high side of the track, allowing Andrews to pull along side. The pair
dragged race down the front stretch with Bobby Foster sticking his
nose in
the middle. Andrews would win by inches, with Sebetto settling for
second,
Foster third, Kevin Lee fourth, Paul Weaver fifth, Andy Shammo sixth,
15th
starting Brad Bowman seventh, Scott Kraylek eighth, Duane Zablocki
ninth and
Dustin Keegan rounding out the top 10.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, July 15 for Beck Oil
Night
featuring the 410 sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks. Gates open
at 4:30
p.m. with racing slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information
