Reed holds off
Linder for Fremont win; Andrews, Waltermeier score second victories
By Brian Liskai
FREMONT, Ohio (Saturday, July 15, 1006) - Sometimes in racing you just
need
to start with a clearn slate. That's just what Byron Reed decided to
do at
Fremont Speedway a few weeks ago and it paid off Saturday, as the "Monclova
Missile" held off a charging Mike Linder for his first win of the season
in
the Fort Ball Pizza 410 Sprints.
Sandusky's Chris Andrews held off a determined Bryan Sebetto to pick
up his
second consecutive feature win in the Fremont Federal Credit Union
305
Sprints on Beck Oil Night.
Wayne, Ohio's Dwight Waltermeier scored his second win of the season
in the
Coors Light Dirt Trucks after a spirited battle the last 10 laps with
Brian
Arnold.
"A couple of weeks ago we decided to try some different set-ups in the
car...something completely different than what we had always run because
we
were struggling so badly," said Reed, the 2003 Fremont track champion.
"This
JEI chassis has responded."
"I have to give the Ford family credit...they gave us a tacky race track,"
said Reed beside his Reebar Diecasting #5.
The fortunes were nearly reversed for Andrews, who last week took advantage
of a Sebetto slip-up on the last lap to score the close victory. In
the
closing laps this week, Andrews nearly tangled with a lapped car, which
allowed Sebetto to close.
"I just had to calm down in the beginning of the race," said Andrews
who
lead all 25 laps in his Spill Tec Environmental Services/Blue Chip
Machining
#15c. "The track was extremely fast tonight and that made it hard when
you
got to lapped cars...they were just about as fast as you."
For Waltermeier, the victory was a very nice birthday present.
"I screwed up last week and got impatient and had to go to the tail.
I was
determined to not repeat that this week. But, just as I thought I'd
settle
down, these guys would race me hard. We didn't lap anyone tonight which
shows you how competitive this division is," said Waltermeier.
In the 410 feature, Reed dove to the bottom to move from his sixth starting
spot to the lead on lap 1. Troy Vaccaro, Craig Mintz, Mark Keegan and
Mike
Linder would trail when the first caution flew before the second lap
could
be completed for a stalled John Ivy.
Reed would continue to lead as the battle for second would heat up between
Vaccaro, Mintz, Keegan and Linder. Mintz would move into second by
the
fourth lap, bringing Linder to third. The caution would fly again on
lap 8
for a spinning Alvin Roepke. On the restart, Reed would have a lapped
machine between he and second place Mintz, with Linder, Keegan, Vaccaro
and
Lee Jacobs.
By lap 12, Reed held a five-car length advantage over Mintz who was
getting
pressure from Linder. Linder would dispose of Mintz two laps later
and set
his sights on Reed. With 10 laps remaining, Reed led over Linder, Keegan
and
Jacobs who was on the move.
With just four laps remaining, Linder closed on the rear bumper of Reed
as
the two raced in lapped traffic. As the white flag flew, Linder tried
to
drive around the outside of Reed for the win, but Reed rocketed off
the
bottom for his 10th career Fremont win. Linder, Jacobs, Keegan, David
Harrison, Caleb Griffith, Phil Gressman, Jamie Miller, Mintz and Bryan
Scott
would round out the top 10.
In the 25-lap 305 feature, Andrews would storm into a big lead from
his pole
starting spot, with Kevin Lee, Todd Heuerman, Sebetto and Bill Kraylek
in
tow. By lap 8 the leaders had hit back markers, allowing the field
to close
on Andrews. The only caution would fly on lap 10, with the Andrews
having
two lapped cars as a cushion over Lee, Sebetto and Heuerman.
Sebetto would get around Lee on lap 15 to move into the runner up spot
and
began to close on Andrews. However, Andrews would rim-ride around the
last
10 laps to hang on to the win by a half a car length over Sebetto,
with Lee,
Paul Weaver, Heuerman, Andy Shammo, Stuart Brubaker, Bill Kraylek,
Craig
Kays and Duane Zablocki rounding out the top 10.
Art Ball would lead the first 10 laps of the 20-lap truck feature, with
the
action for second through sixth exciting between Cory Ward, Art Howey
Jr.,
Brian Arnold, Waltermeier, Aaron Schatzinger. Waltermeier, who started
ninth, moved into fifth by lap five, fourth by lap six, third a lap
later
and into second by lap 10. He would rocket into the lead on lap 11,
bringing
Arnold into second. Those two would battle side-by-side until the caution
would fly on lap 17 of the 20-lap affair.
Waltermeier would hold off Arnold for his third career Fremont win,
with
Ward coming home third followed by Jim McGrath, Ball, Steve Sabo (from
15th), Ron Kepling, Schatzinger, Darren Dukeshire (from 20th), and
Shawn
Valenti rounding out the top 10.
Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, July 22 as Budweiser
Presents the Short Track Shootout featuring the National Sprint Tour.
"The
King," Steve Kinser, Danny Lasoski, Jason Meyers, Jason Solwold, Brian
Paulus, Paul McMahan and the touring stars will battle Fremont's tough
regulars for $10,000 to win.
The Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints will also be in action.
There will be charity auction of racing parts, photos, shirts, etc.
at the
4-H building in the Sandusky County Fairgrounds earlier Saturday to
