FREMONT, Oh. - The non-wing sprint cars made a triumphant return to Fremont Speedway Wednesday night in the first ever Jack Hewitt Non-Wing Challenge. Kokomo, Indiana's Tony Elliott led all 40 laps to take home the $4,000 prize.

It had been nearly 20 years since the sprint cars ran around the third-mile clay oval without wings. On Wednesday, the fans were treated to wheel stands, mud slinging excitement as 35 sprint cars signed into the pits.

"That was a lot of fun. I have to thank promoter Jim Ford and the entire staff for putting on a great show. The fans here are fantastic and I hope we can come back here again," said Elliott, who performed a "Polish victory lap" around the track following the win.

While Elliott was picking his way through lapped traffic, there was a tremendous battle behind him for second between Bill Rose, Jon Stanbrough, Richard Griffin and Byron Reed. When the checkered flew, Stanbrough was second followed by Rose, Griffin and Byron Reed, a regular at Fremont Speedway with the winged sprinters.

California's Troy Rutherford fired the crowed up in qualifying by shattering Sheldon Kinser's 1981 track record of 16.884 with a lap of 14.64, just two and a half seconds off the winged sprint car track record.

Heat race wins went to Rutherford, Elliott, Rose and Columbus City, Indiana's Scotty Orr. Bettsville, Ohio's David Harrison, a regular winged sprint car competitor at Fremont, scored a crowd pleasing victory in the B-Main.

In the 305 sprint division, Bobby Foster patiently picked his way through traffic from his 11th starting spot to score the feature win, his second of the season. Point leader and five-time feature winner in 2001, Bryan Scott of Castalia, Ohio, charged from 12th to finish second followed by Jamie Miller of Fostoria, Brandon Martin of Attica, who came from the tail after an early race spin, and Green Springs, Ohio's Justin Stout.

Scoring 305 sprint heat wins were Foster, Stout and Scott. Fostoria, Ohio's Mark Lang took the B-Main victory.

Fremont Speedway resumes racing this Saturday, June 23 with Burger King Night featuring the 410 winged sprints, 305 sprints and dirt trucks. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with racing to get underway at 7:30 p.m.
