Fremont Speedway concludes 50th season on tragic note

FREMONT, Ohio (Sept. 15) - Fremont Speedway's 50th anniversary season ended on a tragic note Saturday. Jim Deel, driver of the #45 305 sprint, died from injuries sustained in a heat race crash.
Deel, making only his second appearance in a sprint car, crashed hard into the turn 2 wall on lap 5 of the first heat. Deel, 53, of Green Springs, Ohio, was transported to Fremont Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The American Late Model Series made their second appearance of the season at Fremont, with Justin Paxton of Lambertville, Mich., leading all 30 laps for the win. It wasn't easy though, as he had to survive a couple of late-race cautions.
"My heart goes out to the family of that sprint car driver...also to all those families that lost loved ones in Tuesday's deal," said Paxton.
"The track was in great shape tonight...you could get ahold of something and it was a fun race. I just hated seeing those caution flags though," Paxton added.
Behind Paxton there was a great race for second. When the dust had cleared, Shane Yoder secored the runner-up finish with Jerry Bowersock third, Kris Patterson fourth and Hillard Miller fifth.
In the 305 feature, Attica, Ohio's Brandon Martin looked like he had the field covered. But, a right front torsion arm and bar fell off the #11, bringing out the caution with a handful of laps remaining, and sending Martin to the tail for causing the race slow down.
Bryan Scott picked up his ninth feature win of the season at Fremont, ahead of Craig Mintz, Brian Smith, A.J. Sleek and Brock Mayes.
Dan Roepke picked up his fifth feature win of the season in the dirt trucks. Early race leader Jeff Dougherty was second with John Rhoads, Jeff Hites and Jay Boyd rounding out the top five.
The Fremont Speedway fans, the area Jaycee Clubs, the Sandusky County Fairboard and numerous businesses reached into their hearts and pockets and donated over $4,000 to the American Red Cross to aid the victims of Tuesday's terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
