Inside Line Promotions – FREMONT, Ohio (May 31, 2016) – Kevin Mingus is learning quickly during his first season of 305ci sprint car racing on dirt. On Sunday, in just his fifth dirt sprint car race and his first time ever to race at Fremont Speedway, Mingus raced his way into his first feature event.

“We finished last, but I made my first show and on a track I’ve never ran before,” he said. “I’d say we are on the right track. As a whole, I’m starting to get my hands around the goal.”

The weekend began on Friday, when Mingus and the Huber Motorsports team competed in the 305 sprint car division at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio.

“We made changes to the car since the last time I was there and it helped,” he said. “In the heat I thought I had a shot at making my first feature. I drew the fifth starting spot and fell back to sixth on the start. I moved up to fifth and was trying to catch the fourth place car … really thought I could make my first A-main. I decided to try the middle of the track and drove it in too hard and got back in the throttle too quick and spun it out, completely driver error.”

Mingus finished seventh in the heat, which relegated him toward the back of a B Main.

“In the B Main I got to trading slide jobs … a lot of fun. My video game experience came into play,” he joked. “I was more frustrated with myself for the entire night than anything.”

Mingus maneuvered from 12th to ninth place in the consolation race.

On Saturday he headed to Columbus Motor Speedway in Columbus, Ohio, to race a late model on asphalt. However, rain washed out the rest of the night following qualifying.

Mingus returned to the Huber Motorsports 305 sprint car on Sunday at Fremont Speedway.

“I actually worked out a deal with Kyle Capodice (305 sprint driver) that I would pull the pill for him and he would for me,” he said. “He pulled a 25 for me and I got him a 58. That put me on the front row of my heat and he said that was the best number I drew for him at Fremont all year.”

Mingus finished fourth in his heat, thus making his first A Main on dirt.

“That was the slickest track I’ve ever been on … there was hardly any grip,” he said. “I got a lot of help from fellow driver Luke Griffith. He helped me tremendously on how to drive the car. I watched his heat and talked with him, plus I got a lot of help from other drivers. It helped speed up my learning curve.”

Mingus started at the back of the field, but used the opportunity to learn.

“Kurt (Huber, the car owner) knows what the car needs,” he said. “The car was a little too tight. But I learned how to stay out of the way and got to follow guys and learned a lot.”

This Friday Mingus will be back at Fremont Speedway and Saturday calls for him to return to the late model at Columbus Motor Speedway for the 8th annual Robbie Dean Memorial.

“It’s a 94-lap race,” he said. “That is the longest race I’ve ever competed in. I’m excited because we found some issues with the car and I think we will be pretty stout.”
