Inside Line Promotions – FREMONT, Ohio (Sept. 22, 2016) – Kevin Mingus’ rookie season, which featured his first year on dirt in a 305ci winged sprint car and his first year on asphalt in a full-body late model, is coming to an end and he couldn’t be more proud of how it has gone.

“If you look at how we began in March when we first started out and where we are in September … it’s been a remarkable year of growth and improvement,” he said.

Most recently Mingus competed in the Huber 305 sprint car at Fremont Speedway last Friday. In what has become a bad trend for the young driver, the night began with a bad pill draw.

“I’m not experienced enough yet to draw a bad pill, start at the tail of a heat and drive into a transfer spot,” he said. “Most of our pill draws have put us in the last two rows of our heats this year. When we were fortunate to draw a decent pill, we maintained or drove into a transfer position.”

Mingus and the team misjudged track conditions for his heat race, resulting in a seventh-place finish and forcing him to run the B Main.

“We were way too tight,” he said. “We made some adjustments for the B Main and we passed cars. It’s pretty encouraging to see where we have come this year on the dirt with our communication and how I’ve learned to be aggressive.”

Mingus, who ended eighth in the consolation race to cap the night, is planning one more race in the 305 sprint car on Oct. 15 at Millstream Speedway in Findlay, Ohio.

“We’re going there to have fun, but I want to be aggressive and set us up for next year,” Mingus said. “What we’ve shown over the past couple of months … we aren’t that far off from most of the competition.”

Mingus recently wrapped up his season in the late model, finishing sixth in points at Columbus Motor Speedway in Columbus, Ohio, and fifth in the Ohio State late model standings.

“Again, for never having run a full-body car, we improved leaps and bounds throughout the season,” he said. “Our biggest downfall early was qualifying. Once I got that figured out we were a top-five car every week. To get a win in my first year was phenomenal.

“It’s kind of a bittersweet deal with Columbus shutting its doors for good now. Losing that track is like losing a family member. It was absolutely one of my favorite tracks. It is the type of track that puts the driver and crew into the equation.”

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT – The Nuckles Family from Columbus Motor Speedway, Midwest Equipment Company Crane Rental and Brandon Oakley Racing

“First I want to thank the Nuckles Family for all they have done with Columbus Motor Speedway,” Mingus said. “It’s a shame Motor Nature rained out the final event at that historic track. That track gave a lot of us a lot of experience and great memories

“Second, I want to thank Brandon Oakley, Frank and Big Mac and everyone at BOR and for the sponsorship help from Midwest Equipment Company Crane Rental for the opportunity. They worked 40 hour jobs and put in countless hours at the shop and at the track every week so that I could go have fun.”

Mingus would also like to thank Huber Machine Werx, Hillbilly Rod Shop and DB3 Imaging.
