Mingus Continues Learning Curve During Doubleheader in Ohio

Inside Line Promotions – FREMONT, Ohio (June 13, 2017) – Sometimes in racing every step forward means there is a step back. Such was the case for young 305ci sprint car driver Kevin Mingus last weekend.

A broken spring on the throttle assembly resulted in a poor heat race run on Friday at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio. That put the Huber-Mingus Motorsports team behind the rest of the night as they failed to transfer out of the B Main.

“In the heat I went into the first turn and lifted, but the car didn’t lift,” he said. “We broke a return spring on the throttle and I had to nurse it home after that. The problems just compounded after that. It was mid-season championship night and double points and FAST points. I put a lot of pressure on myself in the B Main and made too many mistakes. It just wasn’t our night.”

The other great thing about racing is you’re only a night away from redemption. And that was exactly how Mingus attacked the next night at Fremont Speedway. Mingus drove from his sixth starting spot in a heat race to a fifth-place result to lock into the A Main. He then finished where he started – 15th – in the main event.

“I got some very valuable tips from Paul Weaver and Kyle Capodice on how to run a slick race track,” he said. “Kurt (Huber) and I talked and we decided the feature would be just to work on my technique. That took the pressure off me and I learned quite a bit. It restored my confidence and gives us momentum heading into this weekend.”

Mingus is excited to “hit the road” Friday as the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship Series heads to the high-banked, quarter-mile Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio. He will return to Fremont Speedway on Saturday.

“Last year we ran really well at Limaland,” Mingus said. “We missed the A Main by one spot, but I learned so much and had so much fun. I’m very excited to get back there Friday.”

Mingus is currently tied for 13th in the FAST standings and is ranked 13th in both the Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway standings.
