New Car has Confidence Building for Mingus

Inside Line Promotions – FREMONT, Ohio (Aug. 1, 2018) – Two months ago Kevin Mingus was struggling to find the handle on his 305ci winged sprint car.

Over the winter he became not only a driver but team owner as he embarked on only his second full season of dirt racing. A blown engine in June was a blessing in disguise as it gave Mingus time to reflect on the direction his team was going and that led to the purchase of a new chassis.

“We knew we were going to be down a few weeks so we made the decision to buy a new car,” he said. “It’s the first brand new car I’ve ever had in the years I’ve been racing a sprint car. Kear’s Speed Shop made the transition very easy and fellow drivers Kyle Capodice and Tyler Street have been helpful with setups.”

And the results have Mingus excited for the rest of the 2018 season. Last Friday the team ventured to Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, where Mingus placed seventh in a heat race before he raced from fourth to second in the B Main to qualify for the main feature. He then charged from 17th to a 12th-place finish.

“It was the first night at Attica with the new car and it was a great building block,” he said. “It’s the first time this season we were able to transfer out of a heat or B Main. I found something on the bottom of the track.”

The following night at Fremont Speedway Mingus struggled, but learned more about his new car with a 14th-place finish.

“We had a solid night at Attica followed by another solid, learning night at Fremont,” he said. “We stayed on the lead lap both nights and kept pace with some pretty good cars and experienced drivers. I’m very excited for what the rest of the year has in store.

“I have to thank my wife and my dad. My dad is still learning and my wife has been very patient and has sacrificed a lot for me to do what I enjoy. They have taken a lot of pressure off me and I’m having fun again.”

Mingus will travel to Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, this Friday to compete with the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Championship Series Presented by Engine Pro.

“We have some family stuff to do Saturday, but if I can put a solid night together Friday I may be able to convince the family to race at Fremont,” he said.

“I can’t say enough about all the service Griff’s has provided for us with the rebuild,” Mingus said. “My engine has a ton of horsepower. It’s the most powerful motor I’ve had in the nine years I’ve driven a sprint car. The guys at Griff’s provide a lot of insight into our engine program and I’m glad to be back with them.”

Mingus would also like to thank Midwest Equipment Company Crane Rental, Ram Designs, Kear’s Speed Shop, The Mason Jar, Jensen Towing, Hess’ Oriental Martial Arts, TNT Graphics and Chloe Toy Glamour Model for their continued support.
