Henry triumphs at Fremont

By Brian Liskai (Fremont, OH) -- Sandusky, Ohio's Caleb Griffith appeared to have the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint feature in hand at Fremont Speedway Saturday, Aug. 12, holding the lead at the white flag. Something broke in the steering entering turn one on the final lap, sending Griffith into the soft walls. Republic, Ohio's Cap Henry took advantage of Griffith's misfortune to lead the final lap to score his fourth Fremont win of the season on American Powersports Night.

"I feel awful for the whole 33w team (Griffith) there. Me and Caleb have raced together since we were kids running go-karts, it was a lot of fun. I was heartbroken when I seen that thing go off the end of the race track," said Henry beside his Beer Barrel Bourbon, Pro Auto Wraps, FK Rod Ends, Wings Unlimited, Lead Head Waterfowl backed Lane Racing machine.

Fremont, Ohio's John Ivy, the defending Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 track champion, used a lapped car to move around Jamie Miller with six laps to go to claim his third Fremont win of the season. Ivy's victory propelled him passed Jim Linder on the all-time Fremont Speedway win list as his career total at the track now stands at 59.

"A lot of times in lapped traffic, you are better to be in second. I saw here's my shot, I've got to give it a chance. Then we had all those yellows and all those restarts and I was afraid I'd screw up, but I didn't," said Ivy beside his L&R Farms, C&N Supply, Rohr Lawncare, Sonny’s Welding & Machine, Welty Financial, Atkinson Farms, Story Equipment backed Sipes Racing #77i.

Shawn Valenti continued his dominating season in the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks but was challenged most of the race before securing his sixth feature win of the season. Valenti now has 52 career Fremont wins, placing him 7th on the track's all time win list.

"The top of the track was getting a little too far around to run and the center of the race track actually still had a ton of moisture in it so I just cut the track in half and put it in some grip," said Valenti beside his Babcock Racing owned, Best Performance Motorsports; A Plus Auto Center; Craig Miller Trucking; KS Sales & Service; Gressman Powersports backed #7B.

The 410 sprint feature saw Brian Smith lead the first 12 laps before Griffith took command while Henry moved to second one lap later. While Griffith and Henry waged war for the lead spot, Nate Dussel slowly worked his way through the field, passing DJ Foos for third on a lap 15 restart. Henry continued to hound Griffith and passed him coming to lap 26 but a caution flew before the lap was complete, putting Griffith back on the point. Henry led the final lap to take the win. Finishing second through fifth were Dussel, Smith, Foos, and Stuart Brubaker.

Kyle Capodice commanded the first ten laps of the 305 Sprint feature before Jamie Miller took command. Miller appeared to be in control until lapped traffic came into play. Miller got stalled behind a slower car and Ivy took advantage, taking the lead just before a caution on lap 19. Ivy was strong on the restarts, but a caution would fly every time Miller closed the gap in the final stages. Behind Miller at the finish were Paul Weaver, Capodice, and Alvin Roepke.

Shawn Valenti was challenged early in the Dirt Truck feature by Jimmy McGrath, Jr. Meanwhile, John Brooks was slicing through the field and was into third by lap nine. Brooks charged forward to make it a three truck race for the lead until McGrath and Brooks collided on lap 12. The restart put Brad Stuckey in second and Brad Mitten in third. The top three would remain the same for the remainder of the race, with Valenti catching the checkered. Jim McGrath and Dustin Keegan would round out the top five.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action Tuesday, Aug. 20 to kick off the Sandusky County Fair. Fremont Fence Night will beature the talented drivers in the Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprints.
