On a cowboy up race track, Greg Wilson is the sheriff...takes Fremont AFCS loot

By Brian Liskai (Fremont, OH) -- It was a “cowboy up” track at Fremont Speedway Saturday, April 23 and the veteran “sheriff” Greg Wilson who took the loot!

Wilson, of Benton Ridge, Ohio, held off many challenges from Cole Macedo to score his 14th career win at “The Track That Action Built” on Pub 400 Night. The win was worth $4,000 takes to Big D’s Pizza of Clyde.

Macedo, who won the previous night at Attica Raceway Park, increased his point lead in the battle for the All Pro Aluminum Heads/Kistler Racing Products Attica Fremont Championship Series presented by the Baumann Auto Group with his second place finish.

“We know there’s a cowboy here…Cole Macedo…but the sheriff just won the damn race,” joked Wilson. “I know a lot of you like Cole Macedo…he texted me after running side by side for 15 to 20 laps at Attica and about made this old man tear up. I was out in California when his brother (Carson) was just starting and I went to a test and helped his brother and to see him (Cole) turning into what he is…he’s a hell of a gentleman on and off the race track and it was fun to race with him.”

“When you have Andy Potter working on this thing you’re expected to win and I expect myself to win. I have to thank Joe and Diane Seeling for giving me and Andy a chance to do this. Andy and I are gaining the trust you need to be competitive night in and night out to talk to each other and have confidence in what we both want to do,” added Wilson beside his Hercules Tires, Ohio Logistics, DNC Hydraulics, Sugar Street Bar backed #97.

Fremont’s Jamie Miller is undefeated in 305 sprint car competition in 2022. Miller, who has won the last two events at Attica Raceway Park, took the lead from Steve Rando with five laps to go and held off several challenges from Rando to earn his 31st career win at Fremont.

“I’m speechless. I know we’ve been pretty good but we have struggled here the last couple of years. I can’t believe we just won that race…that was a hell of a race with Steve. That had to be a great race for the fans,” said Miller beside his Kenny Kalb Farms, JLH General Contractor, Roberts & Sons Contracting, Sonic Hauling, Queen of Clean, Sloppy’s Sports Café, Smitty’s Pizza, Crown Battery, Rohr Total Lawn Care, Schreinder Farms, Reedtown Tavern, Fostoria Mod Shop, Flooring Outlaw, Phil Rister, Carpenter Creative backed #26.

The win also pads Miller’s lead in the NAPA of Bryan AFCS presented by Jason Dietsch Trailer Sales.

Fostoria, Ohio’s Shawn Valenti took the lead half-way through the Burmeister Trophy Dirt Truck feature and held off challenges from Jeff Babcock and Cory McCaughey to score his 68th career win at Fremont Speedway. Valenti, a four-time and defending dirt truck track champion, sits second on the track’s all-time win list, just 8 victories shy of tying the legendary Art Ball atop the standings.

“I know people get tired of seeing this thing up here but it’s the same truck we’ve run for several years. A lot of other teams are building newer pieces but this old thing just seems to drive to the front,” said Valenti of his A Plus Auto Center, Craig Miller Trucking, Best Performance Motorsports, Dave Story Equipment, KS Sales & Service, S&S Hauling and Excavation backed machine.

In the Fort Ball Pizza Palace 410 Sprint 30-lap A-main, Wilson jumped out to the lead from his pole starting position with Dan McCarron, Harli White, Trey Jacobs, Kyle Capodice and Nate Dussel in tow. A caution with just three laps in kept the field close.

On the restart White drove into second and immediately closed on Wilson. Meanwhile a whale of a battle developed for third involving McCarron, Dussel, Capodice and Macedo. White moved to Wilson’s inside and outside lap after lap looking for a chance to steal the lead but she jumped the cushion and spun, ending her bid for the top spot and handing second to Macedo.

On the ensuing restart Macedo grabbed the lead but Wilson retook the top spit a lap later only to see Macedo regain the lead on lap 11. Macedo too jumped the wicked cushion in turn four a lap later, giving the lead back to Wilson with Dussel moving into second. At the half-way point Wilson held a 2.5 second lead over Dussel, McCarron and Macedo.

With 10 laps to go Macedo took second from Dussel bringing DJ Foos into third. The leaders caught lapped traffic with six to go and Macedo closed quickly on Wilson. Wilson’s lead was down to less than a second with three laps to go but the veteran hit his marks and held on for the win over Macedo, Foos, Dussel and Brian Smith.

Steve Rando grabbed the early lead of the 25-lap Fremont Federal Credit Union 305 Sprint A-main with Paul Weaver, Bryan Sebetto and Miller in tow. Miller moved into third on lap three and took second a circuit later. With just 10 laps scored, Miller began pressuring Rando for the lead and took it in heavy lapped traffic on lap 13 only to see Rando regain the spot a lap later.

Miller drove under Rando for the lead on lap 20 just before the only caution of the race fell. On the restart Miller pulled away for the win over Rando, a charging Dustin Stroup, Tyler Shullick and Seth Schneider.

In the 20-lap dirt truck feature, Jim Holcomb took the early lead while a tremendous battle for second ensued involving Cory McCaughey, RJ Cornett, Valenti and Ben Clapp. Holcomb built a sizeable lead over the next eight laps while the race behind him heated up with Valenti taking second on lap seven. The caution flew on lap nine for debris and on the restart Valenti drove into the lead.

At the half-way point Valenti lead but the truck on the move was 16th starter Jeff Babcock who took second and ran down the leader. McCaughey joined the fun with seven laps to go. Valenti was able to pull away for the win over McCaughey, Babcock, Holcomb and Cornett.

Fremont Speedway will be back in action Saturday, April 30 with the AFCS 410 and 305 sprints and dirt trucks in action.
